(U.K.) Mob Rules-Nothing Left LP (2014)

Country: United Kingdom
Genre: Hardcore Punk
Label: Quality Control HQ
Tracks: 11
Length: 30.0'

Mob Rules are a UK based band who started in 2010 or 2011, but the looks of things.  Initially, Mob Rules started out by playing a blistering and abrasive style of hardcore and powerviolence. Fast forward three years and the band has completely morphed into an all together different beast.  Mob Rules have evolved into a noise damaged, off-kilter, mysterious guy style hardcore band with a killer Cult Ritual, Wiccans, and late era Black Flag vibe that's a definite refreshing change of pace in comparison to the multitude of powerviolence style bands currently in the scene.  Nothing Left is the Mob Rules' latest full-length LP, which was recently released via Quality Control HQ.  Nothing Left features eleven songs of unsettling and blown out sounding hardcore.  Overall, this is another killer LP that should not be missed.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

Jesuslesfilles - ''Le Grain D'or'' (2014)

Country: Canada
Genre: Noise Rock, Garage Pop, Punk
Label: DIY
Tracks: 11
Length: 24'

I have been a long time fan of Montreal garage pop noisemakers Jesuslesfilles, stemming way back to coming across their killer split with The Peelies. We’ve corresponded heaps (thanks internet) and I’ve featured them on my site twice already. Three times, they say, is the charm. This is their latest record, self produced and cramming eleven shards of angular, dissonant post-pop into a mere twenty four minutes. This urgency is crucial to the bands being, devoid of excess fat and adhering perfecting to Do-It-Yourself attitudes, without sounding like anyone or anything predecessing it.

Opener Bicyclette kicks off with aggression, all stomping drums and scuzzy guitars. Martin’s vocal soars over the whole thing, almost detached, part sneer, part comment. Super Mastermind follows, part 60’s garage stomp, part 80’s alt/college rock searing guitar parts. The rhythm section, particularly Benoit’s metronomic drum patterns drive straight to heart, pulverising enough to not be drowned out, but still with the subtlety to not dominate your headspace. The dual vocals of Martin and Azure fizz and swirl amidst the noise, the contrasting tonality pitching just the right amount of girl/guy tension.

The ominous, PiL like intro to Helena rumbles and broods, before exploding into almost minimal riffing and motorik rhythms. A cross between Spacemen 3 and a Postcard Records compilation, fronted by an art school vocal duo, personally this is one of my favourite tracks on an already favourite record. The droning guitar work announcing > fort is soon coupled with pounding skins and a counter riff and the twin replicating vocals of A&M, and a bass line that slinks and twists around everything. This is a song that reminds me bizarrely of the love child of Television and if Bikini Kill weren’t singing about grrrrrrl power, which is a truly wonderful thing.

At a mere twenty eight seconds, title track Le grain d’or could be seen as filler. I argue it’s more a segue, an ambient, noisy step away from it all. It’s length merely allows you to catch your breath. Mort de fatugue races up on you after the momentary lull, all Cramps partially psychobilly riff and demonized drums. Manteau de poil almost sounds like Le Tigre run over and resurrected as a snarling, swirling garage pop number. The processed beats and jarring guitars make this an unlikely dance floor pleasing piece of noisy, disco flecked art-rock.

Album closer Les temps des amour has the air of Royal Trux (circa Sweet Sixteen) about it, 70’s power pop stomp and heavy cymbal action. Coupled with whip smart, angular guitar work and liberal feedback, it’s a perfect closing shot from a band who aren’t afraid to embrace and then mutilate their idols. Le grain d’or is an awesome record from start to finish, there is no filler, no weak links. This is a document of band with everything to gain, but who may not even care much for your approval. They know they’re good.

And really; SO SHOULD YOU. -The Bear Writes Words

Alado Sincera - Pacífico (2012)

Country: Spain
Genre: Post Rock, Pop, Noise, Indie
Label: Repetidor
Tracks: 12
Length: 30'

Pacífico is Alado Sincera 3th album. Pacífico is a strong mixture between polyhedral post rock parallel Don Caballero and noisy indie in vein Karate or June of 44, but this goes beyond with the best weird concept, a monolithic, sweet and convoluted variety of melodies that could remember to Nueva Vulcano or Cigüeña. 100% ER shit.

Irk-Bread And Honey EP (2014)

Country: United Kingdom
Genre: Punk, Noise Rock, Sludge
Label: Self-Released
Tracks: 3
Length: 10.0'

Irk is a three piece band from Leeds,West Yorkshire, UK who formed in late 2013.  Irk plays a blown out, dirty, sludgy, and metallic style of noise rock.  Irk cites Converge, Daughters, Zu, Jesus Lizard, and Meshuggah as influences, which is definitely reflected in this band's sound. Musically, Irk can also be said to be influenced by bands such as Die! Die! Die!, Ten Volt Shock, and 400 Blows.  The most notable aspect of Irk is that the band uses no guitars in their sound.  This three piece relies solely on vocals, drums, and bass to achieve their sound.  This aspect alone is pretty impressive due to the fact that you hardly miss the absence of guitars in Irk's sound.  Bread And Honey is the band's three song EP, which was self-released digitally on May 24th, 2014.  Overall, this is a killer EP for fans of angular, discordant, and blown out sounding noise rock.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

Crows-An-Wra-Kalopsia LP (2014)

Country: United Kingdom
Genre: Post Hardcore, Screamo, Post Rock
Label: Adagio 830/Middleman Records
Tracks: 9
Length: 24.0'

Crows-An-Wra are a four piece band from Kernow, UK who formed in January of 2013.  Crows-An-Wra freatures former members of bands that include Crocus, Ravachol, and Kasa.  Crows-An-Wra play a great style of music that incorporates elements of post hardcore, screamo, and post rock within their sound.  Musically, Crows-An-Ra feature an intense, discordant, volatile, and sometimes chaotic sound paired with forward-thinking experimental post rock.  Musically, Crows-An-Ra remind me a bit of classic screamo bands such as You And I or Saetia mixed with modern bands such as Todos Caeran or Animal Faces.  Kalopsia is the band's latest nine song LP, which was released on July 21st, 2014.  The difference with Kalopsia and the band's last 10" is that Crows-An-Wra make really great use of experimental ambient post rock, which really makes for a compelling, engaging, and dynamic listen. Overall, these combinations of sounds make for an intense and dynamic listen.  Seriously, this album is incredible.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

Wow, this album is incredible.  I was completely stoked to get this as a request from Robert who runs Adagio 830 and No Good records.  Hurula is a new project from Robert Hurula Petterson.  Robert is known for his work in Masshysteri, The Vicious, and Regulations.  Hurula play a melodic and infectiously catchy style of music that seamlessly melds elements of punk, post punk, garage rock, and no-wave into an impossible to ignore sound that's definitely going to win over fans of punk, post punk, garage rock, and no-wave.  Vi Är Människorna Våra Föräldrar Varnade Oss För is the band's debut full-length album, which was released via No Good records on July 24th, 2014.  Overall, Hurula have absolutely nailed it with their debut album and offer up one of the best punk/post punk records if gotten the chance to review this year.  Overall, this album is not to be missed and Hurula is an absolute must listen for fans of Masshysteri, Terrible Feelings, and Obits.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

Wymyns Prysyn - Head In A Vise (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Noise Rock, Punk, Punk Rock
Label: Drugged Conscience,  Muckman
Tracks: 12
Length: 37'

WYMYNS PRYSYN kicks a bunch of ass. We wear sunglasses at night. We wear leather jackets....year-round. We smoke lots and lots of cigarettes. We take our coffee black. We drink our whiskey straight. We write songs about the weather, sugar-free red bull, Henry Owings's bbq, ignorant fools who talk to you THREE INCHES FROM YOUR FACE, and our very american friend John who thinks he's actually an irish expatriate for some reason. This tape contains 12 blistering kvlt punk parties in a non-stop assault on your shitty aiwa boombox. Along the lines of early HOT SNAKES or whatever; we really don't care what you think we sound like. Yes, I just used a semicolon. Stuntman - Incorporate the Excess (2014)

Country: France
Genre: Noisecore, Sludgecore, Mathcore
Label: Solar Flare, Head Records, Lost Pilgrims
Tracks: 7
Length: 25'

From Sète, situated on the southern shorelines of France, a brutalizing outfit known as STUNTMAN thrives. Having polluted the atmospheres of this lush, beautiful landscape since Autumn 2002, through a plethora of lineup changes over the years, and following a considerable discography thus far including two previous albums, an EP, a split and a dozen compilations appearances, STUNTMAN now prepares to deliver their most energetic hatred yet, with the release of their third album, Incorporate The Excess.

Rampant noise-soaked angular hardcore courses through every second of these new tracks STUNTMAN drops on Incorporate The Excess, the album reminiscent of turn-of-the-century pioneers Botch, Keelhaul, Unsane and Knut while brandishing blasting grindcore attitude. Recorded and mixed by Amaury Sauvé at Studio La Senelle and mastered by Nick Zampiello and Rob Gonella at New Alliance East, the nearly twenty-seven minute hellride of Incorporate The Excess ensures you’ll incur whiplash, then drags you through a torturous feedback frenzy right to the bitter end. -Press Note

Well well well, this is really interesting if you see it from the standpoint of tons of boring post rock bands with similar sounds in to the universe. Calf really don't invent anything new but it's not necesary. Stopping aside super-epic-boring crescendos of the majority post rock bands actually, Calf plays with weird mess of guitars, like a noise wall between, Gerda, Breach disquietude, from the calm to the tempest through unhinged catharsis.

Country: USA
Genre: Post Hardcore, Hardcore, Metal
Label: Kill Normal Records, Tor Johnson, Shock Value.

Tracks: A Lot
Length: I'm Lazy

A cornerstone of Connecticut’s DIY screamo/hardcore scene, They and the Children started kicking around in 2002, with their first show in March of that year. Fronted by veteran show promoter Brian Frenette, featuring The Brothers Gorman on guitar and drums, all held up by the elderly father figure of Chris Perrotti switching off bass and guitar duties with Ross Menze, the band has embarked on many tours and released critically acclaimed demos, 7”s, and 12” EPs. They also contributed their song “Aphasia” to a local compilation, along with 49 other Connecticut bands called the “CT Sucks Compilation”. However, the band broke up in Septemberber of 2008, and according to Brian, “It was time to move on to other things.” Members of They and the Children currently play in Iron Hand, who have several releases under their belts.  This partial discography contains their Home LP, Thoughts on Becoming A Ghost 12", their S/T Ep, and their split with Daniel Striped Tiger. We Are Hex is a four piece band from Indianapolis, Indiana who formed in the summer of 2009.  We Are Hex play a dark, forboding, and sinister sounding style of post punk and punk.  I can't help keep from thinking that We Are Hex is what would happen if you threw bands like Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, The Cramps, and White Lung into a blender.  W.D.M.R.S./Tongues is the band's latest two song 7", which was released via Latest Flame records on June 17th, 2014.  This two song 7" features two tracks of sinister and unsettling post punk.  The first track is called W.D.M.R.S., which is a reference to 1960's band Coven.  The song references their  Witchcraft Destroys Minds And Reaps Souls album, according to Latest Flame's bio for this release.  Intros on the vocals to W.D.M.R.S. come courtesy of Jinx Dawson of Coven.  The second song is a jittery depraved sounding post punk song called Tongues.  Fans of White Lung, The Icarus Line,  and Arab On Radar take note, you will surely be blown away by this track.  Overall, this is a killer 7" and should not be missed.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

I don't understand powerviolence like slow and heavy rimths, for this we've sludge and some times I feel the fear in some bands that should be play fast, like if the music will be out of control, too much fast and them crash into a tree and the brains in the floor. I don't feel the fear in Boddicker, they play slow but also at light speed, speed it's cool, long life to speed, they don't pull the handbrake.

After hearing their debut EP in November 2012 and their debut sole self-titled debut last year, I knew this is a band that is worth checking out. And now their follow up, Western Horror, is almost like the soundtrack to a score for either the graphic novel of Frank Miller’s Sin City or almost as if Dario Argento, Sergio Leone, and Lucio Fulci worked together by combining the Italian Horror films of the ‘70s by making it a Giallo-Spaghetti-Western movie that stayed true to combining; The Man With No Name trilogy, Deep Red (Profondo Rosso), Zombi 2, and Suspiria with a Western gore-fest attitude.

The album cover almost looks like a poster that is perfect for the Grindhouse cinemas during that time period in the 1970s for Drive-Thru cinemas for midnight showings as you can imagine audiences to be scared and jump out their car seats when something would happen if the killer had an Ax and attacking the town in the middle of nowhere. And the tagline, “Sometimes looking for weed in strange places goes horribly wrong,” is a perfect way for you to get your popcorn, drink, and rasinets and enjoy a disturbing real horror adventure that you will never forget that you can imagine the movie inside your mind for a disturbing yet hypnotic concept album to explore.

Tumbleweed Dealer have scored another follow-up and the concept of almost doing like a Horror film for the Grindhouse-era in which I have mentioned earlier and it’s something that just took me by surprise after listening about four times of the entire album. And I always wanted to know what kind of tricks they have up their sleeve for the next one. Music From The Other Side Of The Room

Ştiu Nu Ştiu - Ultra Silvam (2014)

Country: Sweden
Genre: Shoegaze, Dream Pop, Doom, Experimental
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 8
Length: 58'

Ştiu Nu Ştiu are a curious musical assemblage from Sweden. The band consists of Kalle Mattsson (Moon & Sun, Arms and Legs, King Kong Kobra), Martin Sandström (Caterpillar Ghost, Jeniferever), Per Tholander (The Search) and Billie Lindahl (Promise and the Monster). So it's a rather unique amalgamation of genres, musicians and ideas. Not surprisingly this sonic confluence is rooted in the bands philosophy. As stated on their website: "Beauty and ugliness need to co-exist. Well written melodies need to be destroyed by distorted mayhem. Melodies need noise, and noise needs to give way to structure and focus." That is an accurate description of what Ştiu Nu Ştiu have created for their first full length album Ultra Silvam.

The successful musical balance between 'beauty' and 'ugly' is often a formidable aspiration... but Ştiu Nu Ştiu are brilliant track after track on this compelling, often enthralling release. The shifts between noisy, droning guitar and beautifully sung alt-rock kept impressing on Ultra Silvam. Even when the band drifts to one extreme of either ugliness or beauty, there is always an undercurrent of its opposite lingering in the mix.

Rarely does an album cover such a range of music in such an overt manner as Ultra Silvam has. It's an experience abounding with dramatic passages that will challenge listeners to absorb and consume. From dark treacherous guitar that howls with fiery noise and jagged distortion to the beautiful vocals of Billie Lindahl. Ultra Silvam finds an impressive measure of ugliness and beauty, capably balancing melody, emotion and imagination. As the album touches so many genres it is easy to recommend it to fans of alternative, post-rock, drone, ambient and/or rock. Dig in and enjoy the banquet of musical extremes. Echoes and Dust

Morbidity - Revealed From Ashes (2014)

Country: Bangladesh
Genre: Death Metal, Thrash Metal
Label: Memento Mori, Me Saco Un Ojo
Tracks: 8
Length: 30'

From Bangladesh, Weapon's original home ground, comes Morbidity with its own unique vision of old school music. Rooted in the late '80s-early'90s style, this band merges elements of both Death Metal and Thrash Metal from a time when both were going their separate ways. This is reminiscent of bands like early Death, Massacre, Grave, Merciless and even Funebre and Finnish Abhorrence. There's depth as well as good 'ol shredding. The vibe is familiar yet fresh. Goetic Equivalent - Goetic Equivalent (2014)

Country: Greece
Genre: Black Metal, Experimental
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 8
Length: 46'

Amidst the filth of the spontaneous instilment of the laws of men. Through the human malevolence and the adversities of those few excommunicated from the lifestyle of the many, there sways like a pendulum the impermeable pact with the Adversary in the mirror. The nomenclatorial blood-bond that no death can do part nor no life will ever be worthy of applying it in its absolute grandeur: Violence. Deterioration in every form possible is the Goetic Equivalent in the system of mental derangement of the divine. Press Note

Beige Eagle Boys - You're Gonna Get Yours (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Noise Rock, Hardcore
Label: Reptilian Records
Tracks: 10
Length: 25'

Recalling the blown out syrupy sweet distortion of the Cherubs and the upper Midwest scuzz of the Bastards and Hammerhead, or while we’re at it, all the finest cherry picked grime from AmRep, Touch & Go and Trance Syndicate, Detroit’s BEIGE EAGLE BOYS throw the rock gears into a mid nineties noise rock reverse, gargling nuts and bolts and gravel and then flossing with guitar strings left over in Tom Hazelmyer’s garage. But this is not a tribute to a dead scene. This is the face of noise rock now: even more raw, hardcore, weird, and loud. On "You’re Gonna Get Yours", the trio’s debut album, they blast out a quick and potent rust belt racket with all three gents hollering over top. Every studio meter red-lined, every tube amp threatened with exhaustion, all three larynxes threatened with whatever the hell happens to larynxes after this kind of abuse. Ten songs done the right kind of wrong way, and all of it iced off with a distorted, up the ass cover of Don Henley’s Dirty Laundry. Reptilian is proud to send this one out in to the world. Come see them on tour wherever clubs will have them. Just don’t ask about the name. That shit’s a closely guarded secret. Press Note

Séptimo Inferno - Demo 2014

Country: Chile
Genre: Hardcore, Sludge
Label: DIY
Tracks: 5
Length: 15.78'

Altamente Recomendado!!!

Stella - Big Table No People (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Math Punk, Noise Rock
Label: DIY
Tracks: 9
Length: 15'

Over the past month or so I’ve been getting into the house show scene in Columbus, since there really isn’t much of am active scene to speak of in my native Dayton-area. I’ve met some really cool people so far, including Ryan Jewell, touring improviser and member of such bands as Psychedelic Horseshit; Keith Rankin, who performs as Giant Claw and co-runs Orange Milk Records; and Kevin Hall from today’s subject, the noise trio Stella. Kevin is really nice, and like myself, fairly quiet, so to me it makes sense that he’s in a band that plays very loud and very aggressively. Six releases deep, we now have the newest effort from the band, Big Table No People, which to be short is pretty damn good.

As someone who is inherently non-confrontational, I find the act of being musically aggressive and abrasive fascinating and liberating. So as much as I love very soft, warm music, I also love to completely fall apart with noise and volume and distortion. The 16-minute onslaught brought forth from this album is exactly the kind of thing I’m looking for when I’m wanting that release. Hall’s vocals on this album are visceral and diverse, stretching from spoken word that struggles to stay afloat in the wash of noise, to early-Devo Mark Mothersbaugh yelps, to screams reminiscent of James Chance. His lyrics are dark, existential, abstract at times; typical fare for this music, which isn’t a bad thing, since you certainly wouldn’t be expecting lyrics about sunshine and rainbows here. They are also hard to decipher at times (thank you Bandcamp lyrics feature). The playing on the album is complex, driving, and dense, and when it does thin out, like in the beginning of “Generation Loss,” the effect is striking, letting your guard down for just a moment before they shoot right back into the fray. Other than a few moments of reprieve, the trio just bombards you for the album’s short but effective length.

Other than personally wanting the production to be a bit more beefy and forward, I’m quite pleased with this new outing from Stella. It’s albums like these that give me faith that good things can in fact come from my area, and the Columbus scene in particular is producing a LOT of excellent stuff right now. Stella is playing a show later this month with current noise rock buzzers White Suns, and fellow Ohio noise acts Drose and Murderedman, a show that I cannot believe is happening in a bar and not a basement. From this work, I’m sure that “no people” will not be a fitting descriptor for the audience. -Funeral Sounds
