Uzumaki - Uzumaki EP (2014)

Country: Spain
Genre: Punk, Electronic, Industrial
Label: Boston Pizza, Discos Porno
Tracks: 6
Length: 13'

This is another strange band. Uzumaki are a duo from spain, playing a weird punk-grunge with little spanish 80's pop-punk influence. Accompanying this is a drum machine that gives them a frenetic, electronic and industrial touch. One of the most interesting proposals of the year.

Arida - Cenizas EP (2014)

Country: Spain
Genre: Stoner, Desert Rock
Label: Nooirax
Tracks: 5
Length: 19'

Well... at the end today is the day of the spanish duos. This time guitar-drums. Arida is like a summer night, you are too much drunk and start to run in the desert to the moon. On the way, you hallucinated and see a nuked girl, and sweaty, you begin to make love. For those who do not find out... Arida sounds similar to Israeli duo Carusella, maybe less heavy, more melodic but better female vocals. Fucking great.

Boddicker - Crime Upheaval (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Crust, Powerviolence, Grindcore
Label: DIY
Tracks: 12
Length: 21'

Boddicker strikes again. Previously reviewed by Flei here, they keep in the same way, better production and maybe less powerviolence, but sincerely it's better, I'll try explain it with my fucked english learning menawhile I was watching Lost. I don't understand powerviolence like slow and heavy rimths, for this we've sludge and some times I feel the fear in some bands that should be play fast, like if the music will be out of control, too much fast and them crash into a tree and the brains in the floor. I don't feel the fear in Boddicker, they play slow but also at light speed, speed it's cool, long life to speed, they don't pull the handbrake.

Tumbleweed Dealer - Western Horror (2014)

Country: Canada
Genre: Stoner, Psychedelic, Post Rock, Instrumental
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 8
Length: 47'

Tumbleweed Dealer is one of the most promising up-and-coming bands from Montreal that I’ve listened to since 2012. After hearing their debut EP in November 2012 and their debut sole self-titled debut last year, I knew this is a band that is worth checking out. And now their follow up, Western Horror, is almost like the soundtrack to a score for either the graphic novel of Frank Miller’s Sin City or almost as if Dario Argento, Sergio Leone, and Lucio Fulci worked together by combining the Italian Horror films of the ‘70s by making it a Giallo-Spaghetti-Western movie that stayed true to combining; The Man With No Name trilogy, Deep Red (Profondo Rosso), Zombi 2, and Suspiria with a Western gore-fest attitude.

The album cover almost looks like a poster that is perfect for the Grindhouse cinemas during that time period in the 1970s for Drive-Thru cinemas for midnight showings as you can imagine audiences to be scared and jump out their car seats when something would happen if the killer had an Ax and attacking the town in the middle of nowhere. And the tagline, “Sometimes looking for weed in strange places goes horribly wrong,” is a perfect way for you to get your popcorn, drink, and rasinets and enjoy a disturbing real horror adventure that you will never forget that you can imagine the movie inside your mind for a disturbing yet hypnotic concept album to explore.

Tumbleweed Dealer have scored another follow-up and the concept of almost doing like a Horror film for the Grindhouse-era in which I have mentioned earlier and it’s something that just took me by surprise after listening about four times of the entire album. And I always wanted to know what kind of tricks they have up their sleeve for the next one. Music From The Other Side Of The Room

Ştiu Nu Ştiu - Ultra Silvam (2014)

Country: Sweden
Genre: Shoegaze, Dream Pop, Doom, Experimental
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 8
Length: 58'

Ştiu Nu Ştiu are a curious musical assemblage from Sweden. The band consists of Kalle Mattsson (Moon & Sun, Arms and Legs, King Kong Kobra), Martin Sandström (Caterpillar Ghost, Jeniferever), Per Tholander (The Search) and Billie Lindahl (Promise and the Monster). So it's a rather unique amalgamation of genres, musicians and ideas. Not surprisingly this sonic confluence is rooted in the bands philosophy. As stated on their website: "Beauty and ugliness need to co-exist. Well written melodies need to be destroyed by distorted mayhem. Melodies need noise, and noise needs to give way to structure and focus." That is an accurate description of what Ştiu Nu Ştiu have created for their first full length album Ultra Silvam.

The successful musical balance between 'beauty' and 'ugly' is often a formidable aspiration... but Ştiu Nu Ştiu are brilliant track after track on this compelling, often enthralling release. The shifts between noisy, droning guitar and beautifully sung alt-rock kept impressing on Ultra Silvam. Even when the band drifts to one extreme of either ugliness or beauty, there is always an undercurrent of its opposite lingering in the mix.

Rarely does an album cover such a range of music in such an overt manner as Ultra Silvam has. It's an experience abounding with dramatic passages that will challenge listeners to absorb and consume. From dark treacherous guitar that howls with fiery noise and jagged distortion to the beautiful vocals of Billie Lindahl. Ultra Silvam finds an impressive measure of ugliness and beauty, capably balancing melody, emotion and imagination. As the album touches so many genres it is easy to recommend it to fans of alternative, post-rock, drone, ambient and/or rock. Dig in and enjoy the banquet of musical extremes. Echoes and Dust

Beige Eagle Boys - You're Gonna Get Yours (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Noise Rock, Hardcore
Label: Reptilian Records
Tracks: 10
Length: 25'

Recalling the blown out syrupy sweet distortion of the Cherubs and the upper Midwest scuzz of the Bastards and Hammerhead, or while we’re at it, all the finest cherry picked grime from AmRep, Touch & Go and Trance Syndicate, Detroit’s BEIGE EAGLE BOYS throw the rock gears into a mid nineties noise rock reverse, gargling nuts and bolts and gravel and then flossing with guitar strings left over in Tom Hazelmyer’s garage. But this is not a tribute to a dead scene. This is the face of noise rock now: even more raw, hardcore, weird, and loud. On "You’re Gonna Get Yours", the trio’s debut album, they blast out a quick and potent rust belt racket with all three gents hollering over top. Every studio meter red-lined, every tube amp threatened with exhaustion, all three larynxes threatened with whatever the hell happens to larynxes after this kind of abuse. Ten songs done the right kind of wrong way, and all of it iced off with a distorted, up the ass cover of Don Henley’s Dirty Laundry. Reptilian is proud to send this one out in to the world. Come see them on tour wherever clubs will have them. Just don’t ask about the name. That shit’s a closely guarded secret. Press Note

Genre: Hardcore, Sludge

Length: 15.78'

Stella - Big Table No People (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Math Punk, Noise Rock
Label: DIY
Tracks: 9
Length: 15'

Over the past month or so I’ve been getting into the house show scene in Columbus, since there really isn’t much of am active scene to speak of in my native Dayton-area. I’ve met some really cool people so far, including Ryan Jewell, touring improviser and member of such bands as Psychedelic Horseshit; Keith Rankin, who performs as Giant Claw and co-runs Orange Milk Records; and Kevin Hall from today’s subject, the noise trio Stella. Kevin is really nice, and like myself, fairly quiet, so to me it makes sense that he’s in a band that plays very loud and very aggressively. Six releases deep, we now have the newest effort from the band, Big Table No People, which to be short is pretty damn good.

As someone who is inherently non-confrontational, I find the act of being musically aggressive and abrasive fascinating and liberating. So as much as I love very soft, warm music, I also love to completely fall apart with noise and volume and distortion. The 16-minute onslaught brought forth from this album is exactly the kind of thing I’m looking for when I’m wanting that release. Hall’s vocals on this album are visceral and diverse, stretching from spoken word that struggles to stay afloat in the wash of noise, to early-Devo Mark Mothersbaugh yelps, to screams reminiscent of James Chance. His lyrics are dark, existential, abstract at times; typical fare for this music, which isn’t a bad thing, since you certainly wouldn’t be expecting lyrics about sunshine and rainbows here. They are also hard to decipher at times (thank you Bandcamp lyrics feature). The playing on the album is complex, driving, and dense, and when it does thin out, like in the beginning of “Generation Loss,” the effect is striking, letting your guard down for just a moment before they shoot right back into the fray. Other than a few moments of reprieve, the trio just bombards you for the album’s short but effective length.

Other than personally wanting the production to be a bit more beefy and forward, I’m quite pleased with this new outing from Stella. It’s albums like these that give me faith that good things can in fact come from my area, and the Columbus scene in particular is producing a LOT of excellent stuff right now. Stella is playing a show later this month with current noise rock buzzers White Suns, and fellow Ohio noise acts Drose and Murderedman, a show that I cannot believe is happening in a bar and not a basement. From this work, I’m sure that “no people” will not be a fitting descriptor for the audience. -Funeral Sounds

Reserving Dirtnaps - s/t EP (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Metal
Label: DIY
Tracks: 5
Length: 19'

Straight outta Memphis, USA comes Reserving Dirtnaps, who approached me a while ago with their 5-track mcd. It’s awesome that in these days of the inter nerd, some people still bother to promote their bands personally and not just spam links on facebook etc, even just with email, but still. So with the fact that, Reserving Dirtnaps sounded pretty damn good, heavy as fuck hardcore that isn’t exactly all beatdown, but maintains chugging heaviness on pretty crazy level, i decided to do a review for them.

As said the band comes from Memphis, Tennessee and features also members from older Memphis band, Clenched Fist. Their sound though, isn’t exactly same with CF, but if you like them, you probably like Reserving Dirtnaps too. For what i hear in their music could be bands such as; Cold As Life, Bulldoze, Stout and Next Step Up. They are delivering punishing heaviness, but still sound like proper heavy hardcore, not like those bands, that sound like their every song is just one endless bad moshpart. You could compare them also in a way with some newer bands that are right now delivering their shit far more heavier than most like: Lifeless, Bottomfeeder and Xibalba.

No Consent is the first track on Reserving Dirtnaps S/T Cd and the rough, mostly slow tempo filled chugging is bound to blow shit up. Commune continues straight off with similar heavy straightforward brutality and by far here you should also have noticed vocalist Brandon’s voice, he sounds seriously pissed and menacing. Don’t be afraid that they are just pummeling riffs down slow and low, cause they are throwing in time to time some faster parts like you can hear in Commune and in couple songs there is a bit of death metal influences to be heard too, maybe it’s the vocals, which are really brutal, but what do i know, all i do is that this stuff is working pretty damn well. Dim Passage is another no punches pulling juggernaut and i really like that RD has got a sound as heavy and hard as their songs are, it’s a tidal wave of crushing sound coming straight at you, i actually got stuck listening into this song and snapped awake just only when it ended, you could say that’s heavy. Fourth track Scars Of The Eye, throws in some almost melodic riffs, that don’t last very long, but give in variety of what this band are able to put in their songs. Fate’s Messenger blows out with full on pedal attack, then slows down into mosh frenzy, again hitting that fucking freight train mode, pillaging everything. This five track mcd is pretty hard starter for this young band and i for one am really excited to hear more of these guys, if you are into heavy hardcore at all, please give these guys a minute of your time, you can listen the whole cd right here, right now. - Killing The Legacy

Cowards - World Champions in Male Chastity (2014)

Country: Canada
Genre: Noise Rock, Post Punk, Psychedelic
Label: DIY
Tracks: 12
Length: 32'

Bought it in Olympia, sounds like it could be from Olympia (which is a polite way of saying that it sounds kinda pretentious even though it’s really good), and it was recorded in Vancouver. I’m gonna go ahead and say that COWARDS are from Canada, since I really like the tape and find myself generally fond of Canadians. COWARDS hit on so many cylinders on this demo…immediately, they remind me of JESUS LIZARD, but that comparison fades after the first song. The combination of distorted vocals and DK-esque high end guitar repeatedly stabbing leads into the rhythm section creates an aura reminiscent of feisty goth bands, but COWARDS sound to hip (and even a little too rock ‘n roll) for that. “Human Smear” starts off with such a minimally infectious riff, and then they break it expertly into half time and make it even better - all this before the song even starts. “In The Mouths Of 13 Year Olds” follows, and the vibe is complete…COWARDS are THE VSS on Dilaudid plus UNSANE wearing suits and playing in a candlelit goth club. Now the only thing more pretentious than the music is my magniloquent description of the music. -Terminal Escape

Cutters-We Are The Quarry LP (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Punk, Emo, Indie Rock
Label: Lost State Records
Tracks: 8
Length: 26.0'

Wow, this album really caught me off guard.  Cutters are a four piece band from Brooklyn, NY who formed in 2012.  Cutters play a catchy style of music that really does an awesome blurring the lines between punk, emo, and, indie rock.  Cutters jump back and fourth between different styles of music with pleasing results.  At first, the band had me thinking that they were going to be an ambient/somber style of emo made popular by bands such as Pity Sex or Estates.  Jumping into the next song, Cutters had me thinking of goofy and melodic punk played by bands such as The Latterman.  Cutters also throw in a bit of anthematic punk reminiscent of bands such as Against Me! or Gaslight Anthem.  Finally, to make matters more confusing, Cutters throw in a bit of mathy emo complete with shouted gang style vocals that remind me of TWIABPAIATD.  These combinations of sounds and styles might sound like these dudes need a healthy dose of ritalin, but Cutters pull off this sound remarkably well.  We Are The Quarry is the band's latest eight song LP, which was released via Lost State Records on June 10th, 2014.  Overall, We Are The Quarry is a really solid album and is an absolute must listen for fans of modern punk, emo, and indie rock.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

Thin Privilege - Thin Privilege (2014)

Country: UK
Genre: Noise Rock, Post Punk
Label: Struggletwon Records
Tracks: 11
Length: 29'

Thin Privilege is Twin-bass-driven distortion assault. With members drawn from some of the Scottish underground’s most fearsome and exhilarating bands of the last five years, Thin Privilege smash those collective influences and experiences, fist-first, into their audiences. Clad in black and channelling the spirit of Three One G and early 90s noise-rock stable Amphetamine Reptile, but funneled through a contemporary mesh of post-punk and no-wave nihilism.

Please note: The Orange/Clear Record was originally supposed to have frosted clear vinyl in the centre, but we have just been told that is impossible and had to swap it around so that the orange vinyl is in the centre. Apologies. -Press Note

Bädr Vogu - Agglomeration XXIV TAPE (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Sludge, Doom, Crust
Label: Transylvanian Tapes
Tracks: 2
Length: 14'

Bädr Vogu is a Sludge band from Oakland (((California))) that started out in 2010. Formed from the ashes of World Eater, Midnightmare and Hotblack Desiato, they have been crushing and garnering a loyal following throughout the underground since their inception. They have played some of the most killer shows I’ve seen, and fortunately, have been able to be a part of. Our bands have played together a bunch of times, and these are good friends that I really respect. The first show Swamp got to play in Oakland was opening up a garage show that Bädr Vogu played, alongside Galdr – the last show that we got to play with Bädr Vogu was alongside Eyehategod in San Jose. I support these guys and I am honored to debut their very first music video for their new single, “Anathema of Time,” directed by Drew Dorsey.

“Anathema of Time” is a track off their new recording, Agglomeration MMXIV. Salvador Raya (Asunder) recorded it at Earhammer Studios in Oakland (((California))). I am really excited to be able to share this release with everyone; the B-Side includes another heavy dose of headbangable Misanthropic Sludge that was previously only available on LP from their split with Wilt. Transylvanian Tapes is releasing physical copies of Agglomeration MMXIV that will be obtainable in July. -CVLTNation

Agatha - Gravis Atque Gravior (2014)

Country: Italy
Genre: Sludge, Punk, Noise
Label: Wallace Records, Sangue Dischi, Il verso del Cinghiale, Panda Banda Records, Cheap Satanism, Chaos Rurale records, Overdrive Records, No Work Records
Tracks: 7
Length: 30'

The come-back of Agatha opens with a song important, not only because of example of the state of health of the duo and what Gravis Atque Gravior contains the musical point of view, but also for the subject matter, that ever as it appears today current. 1981 was the year in Italy were repealed the statutory provisions relating to the so-called "honor killing", a real shame that seems to come directly from a manual of medieval history and that, unfortunately, continues to lurk still in the folds of a society by no means cured of Alzheimer's machismo. The ardor with which the Agatha addressing the topic through heavy notes and chipped, detached from any form of compromise and born to hit in the stomach, the daughters of an unhealthy encounter between metal, noise and hardcore, but outside of any dominant trend or "hipsterismo" more or less glossy, is worth a thousand declarations of intent. The duo's sound is the result of a vital instinct burning, an organized chaos with the fury of those who collect their things before the flames reach the house, a poster of the discomfort that is also proud of his being out of the chorus, as well summarizes, "A Song For The Different." If you already have the previous Goatness had raised the level of confrontation with Gravis Atque Gravior the conflict is war without quarter and shows the danger of a band that has made it even more explosive his formula bass drums, vocals on which surges from unmistakable stamp, trademark of a language that seems to come from amplifiers into the mud of Louisiana. Seven songs for a race that comes to an end all too soon and makes me want to repeat the ride, to shake his head in time and lose interest in what will happen next, because deep down we know the ending already and we can not do much but the way things are and you might as well enjoy the ride while it lasts ...

The Agatha came back more aggressive than ever and once again hit the target. The rest, frankly, matters little. -Originally reviewed on The New Noise and them destroyed by google
