Earthburner - Forced To Exist (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, D-Beat, Thrash, Death
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 8
Length: 24'

Earthburner is a power-trio from Colombus, Ohio, previously featured on this blog with their first album "Stoned At Birth" in 2012. They are back with another killer album, released on 5th March. Clocking in almost 25 minutes, "Forced To Exist" is pure savagery and unrelenting music. You can hear Entombed-style riffage with crust/d-beat leanings, which overall makes it a powerful and a unforgiving listen. Seriously, this album will tear you apart. Highly recommended, dig it.

Avvika-S/T 12" (2014)

Country: Czech Republic/Sweden
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Crust, Post Metal, Post Hardcore
Label: Self-Released (Music For Liberation?)
Tracks: 2
Length: 35.0'

Now here's a band that I accidentally stumbled across when surfing for more information on bandcamp about Marnost after digging the last two posts about that band from my blogger in crime, Eraser.  Avvika is a five piece band from Praha (CZ), Děčín (CZ) and Stockholm, Sweden, who formed in 2013, from the looks of things.  Avvika play an epic, dense, and atmospheric style of music that's inspired by several sub genres of heavy music including hardcore, punk, crust, post metal, and post hardcore.  The great thing about Avvika is that their vocalist is female and the band also employs the use of strings, which adds another hauntingly bleak layer to the band's already barren and foreboding sound.  Loose comparisons can be made to bands such as Amber, Fall Of Efrafa, Lightbearer, and Locktender when describing Avvika's sound.  This is the band's debut two song LP, which was self-released digitally on February 26th, 2014.  Overall, this album makes for a really complex, dark, and powerful listen.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

(U.S.) Somos-Temple Of Plenty LP (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Punk, Emo, Indie Rock
Label: Tiny Engines
Tracks: 9
Length: 27.0'

Somos is a four piece band from Boston, MA who formed in 2012.  Somos play a melodic, energetic, and impossibly catchy style of punk, emo, and indie rock.  The cool thing about Somos is that they have a somber undercurrent that is vaguely reminiscent of bands such as Pity Sex, Daylight, and Make Do And Mend.  Actually, this is my first taste of the band, which is always a good thing when doing reviews, because I had no expectations about these four dudes whatsoever and I pretty much approached this album with a completely blank slate.  With that being said, Temple Of Plenty absolutely delivers the goods.  The nine songs on this album will definitely appeal to the Topshelf records template of punk/emo, but does so in a way that steers clear of being derivative or a total rehash of countless numbers of modern emo bands.  Overall, this is an amazing LP that will definitely appeal to anyone who appreciates modern punk, emo, and indie rock.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

Olive Drab-The Big Sleep LP (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Punk, Emo, Indie Rock
Label: Birdtapes
Tracks: 10
Length: 21.0'

Olive Drab is a four piece band from Philadelphia, PA who formed in 2012.  Olive Drab play a killer style of punk, emo, and indie rock.  Musically, Olive Drab can be loosely compared to bands such as Algernon Cadwallader, Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate), Nai Harvest, as well as older emo/indie bands such as Knapsack and Mineral.  With that being said, please use these comparisons as a starting point of reference because Olive Drab have a sound and personality all their own.  The Big Sleep is the band's debut ten song LP, which was or will soon be released on cassette through Birdtapes.  This ten song LP hits in all the right places and will definitely appeal to anyone into modern emo and indie rock.  Seriously this album is that good.  I'm actually quite surprised that a larger label like Topshelf or Run For Cover hasn't scooped these dudes up yet.  Overall, Olive Drab have absolutely nailed it.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!  Act quick if you want a copy of this cassette because only 50 copies of The Big Sleep were made.

The Stabs Discography (2006-2009)

Country: Australia
Genre: Post-Punk, Blues Punk, Noise Rock
Label: Homeless Records, Spooky Records
Tracks: 18
Length: 67'

After forming nearly ten years ago, Melbourne band, The Stabs, didn't so much burst onto any scene, they burst dramatically all over several. Despite the band's best intentions, they quickly developed a notoriety for violence, both musical and literal. Driven by a perfectionism that they felt was lost on their audience, shows often exploded into a masochistic orgy of self-destruction. The band's frustration at their own perceived shortcomings causing damage to equipment and eardrums, whilst audience members cheered in the false assumption that The Stabs were intentionally about the spectacle of discordance, implosion, self-loathing, ataxia, drug abuse, and danger music. Heroically, the members of the band staid the course, desperate to prove that their musical vision was sound (double entendre intended). Within a few years, the band managed to turn their reputation from disastrous train wreck to world-class exponents of a uniquely Australian form of rock music, that curious entanglement of punk, blues, noise, and swamp pioneered by bands such as The Scientists, Birthday Party, and Lubricated Goat.

They were Mick Harvey's pick for the inaugural ATP at Mt Buller. Unbeaten and undiminished, The Stabs impressed all-comers with their tight devotion to ear-splitting intensity... And songs. Unlike many groups which have preceded and followed, this band have always been a songs-based act. Underneath quivering slabs of feedback, the gut-wrenching rumble of bass, and punishing percussion, an almost incongruous pop sensibility still manages to emerge. With the release on vinyl of The Stabs first two full-length albums, this is what listeners can expect. Equal parts sonic bliss and aural castigation. Putting their days of wanton chaos and self-sabotage far behind them, and with the assistance of Homeless Records, 2006?s "Dirt" and 2009's "Dead Wood" are available for the first time on The Stabs preferred format, black vinyl. With this double release, The Stabs are proud to announce that they are not dead (once again, double entendre intended). The Stabs have done their penance, now it?s up to you - punish yourself! Length: 14.0'

Black Celebration is a five piece band from Providence, RI who formed in early 2014.  Black Celebration is comprised of current and former members of Bones Brigade, Concrete Facelift, Lowlife, Deathwish, and SDS.  Black Celebration play a really burly, snotty, and ultra-pissed style of hardcore/punk.  Black Celebration's sound has a killer Jealous Again era Black Flag by way of Trash Talk or early Ceremony vibe that's impossible to ignore.  This really makes Black Celebration's sound stand out from the pack, which translates into a sound that's impossible to ignore.  This is the band's debut seven song demo, which was self-released by the band on April 7th, 2014.  This demo features six original songs plus a cover of Nirvana's Aneurysm  Overall, this is a phenomenal demo.  Seriously, get on this!!! Country: USA
Genre: Punk, Post Punk, Goth, Death Rock
Label: Self-Released
Tracks: 5
Length: 12.0'

Stranger is a five piece band from Boston, Ma who formed in early 2014, by the looks of things.  Stranger features Gabe, the former guitarist of Host on drums.  Stranger play a hard to describe hybrid style of punk, post punk, goth, and death rock.  As far as comparisons go, Stranger can be loosely affiliated with bands such as Sex Cross, Criminal Code, and Nervous.  One aspect of Stranger's sound that makes the band stand out from their peers is in the vocal department.  Stranger features snotty and really pissed sounding female vocals, which is a refreshing change of pace from the usual prerequisite gothy male vocals usually found in this style of music.  This is Stranger's debut five song demo, which was self-released digitally by the band on March 10th, 2014.  Overall, this is a killer EP that's an absolute must listen for fans of bands found on Deranged and Video Disease records.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

Country: USA
Genre: Post Punk, Indie Rock, Grunge
Label: Null Records
Tracks: 6
Length: 26.0'

Tiny Empires is a six piece band from Tampa/Gainsville, Fl and Houston, Tx who formed in 2011.  Tiny Empires features musicians who have an impressive wealth of experience due to band members spending time playing in bands that include O Pioneers!!!, New Bruises, Senders, Mid Carson July, and The Grey AM.  Tiny Empires play a phenomenal style of music that draws inspiration from a variety of sub genres of music that include post punk, indie rock, and grunge.  The band bills itself as a band that's listened to too much Cursive, Fugazi, Archers of Loaf, and Rocket From The Crypt according to their bandcamp page, which most likely was done with tongue firmly planted in cheek.  I'm not sure if I'd agree with that either, but here's what I do know.  Tiny Empires have crafted a killer album's worth of dark and uncompromising music that combines elements of post punk, grunge, and indie rock within their sound.  Tiny Empires' sound features jagged rhythms, progressive melodies, and lots of grit, coupled with a dark undertone that truly makes for a compelling listen.  Weird Headspace is the band's debut six song LP, which was released via Null records on April 15th, 2014.  Overall, these six songs make for an amazing listen and Tiny Empires is an absolute must listen for fans of Creative Adult, Sainthood Reps, and The Constantines.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

Taurus - No/Thing (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Psychedelic Doom Metal, Experimental
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 5
Length: 39'

Taurus are a psychedelic dark doom, drone duo from Portland consisting of Stevie Floyd of Dark Castle and Ashley Spungin formerly of Purple Rhinestone Eagle. Together they have produced a spiritually godless cathartic audio masterpiece called No/Thing. With the help of producer/engineear Billy Anderson, who also does the vocals on ‘Increase Aloneness’, its fair to say that No/Thing will take you on a nightmarish doom/drone audio roller coaster of a journey.

Paranoid screams and black mass rumblings will seep through you cranium delivering chilling avant doom/terrorscapes of suffering, agony and torment but where there is torment there is tranquility and No/Thing is a well balanced album exploring both aspects with each track blending together seamlessly. There is also the chance of having blood streaming from your eyeballs when wearing headphones, you have been warned! Echoes And Dust

UR - UR (2013)

Country: Germany
Genre: Doom Metal, Post Metal
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 3
Length: 41'

UR is four-piece band from Dresden/Germany formed 2010 and they play a blend of atmospheric Post and Doom Metal, inspired, according to their self-description, by “the realm of forgotten, exterminated and endangered animals” and like the band name and the song titles as well as the doomy epic slow heaviness of the music itself suggest, their focus is not so much on insects but rather on larger more massive species.

Immanent in all three songs are their slow build ups that pile up to huge waves of ambient sound carrying an atmosphere of a dark, gloomy melancholy. Vocals are near to non-existent, but used to great effect.  This is an amazing debut album. Most striking are the slow and long build ups that are able to carry their tension into the ambient soundscapes without drowning all the subtler details. This gives the songs a kind of filigree elegance and texture still embraced by doomy heaviness. Temple Of Perdition

Nous Étions-La Manière Noire LP (2014)

Country: Canada
Genre: Post Hardcore, Punk, Screamo, Sludge
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 7
Length: 23.0'

Nous Étions is a five piece band from Montreal, Canada who formed in 2010. Nous Étions play a dark and powerful style of music that seamlessly melds equal parts post hardcore, punk, screamo, and sludge.  Nous Étions can be said to be influenced by bands that include Amanda Woodward, Aussitot Mort, Death Mercedes, Burning Bright, and Celeste.  Since their inception in 2010, Nous Étions have two releases under their belts including a five song EP entitled Limbes, which was released in 2012 and a split 7" with Aldo Raine, which was released in late 2012 and in physical format in 2013.  La Manière Noire is the band's latest seven song LP.  As of now, the album has been only been released in digital format, but according to the band's bandcamp page, the album will be released physically through several different record labels in the coming months. To put it simply, Nous Etions' sound is massive, dark, and intense to say the least.  Overall, the seven songs on La Manière Noire make for a dark, powerful, and impossible to ignore listen.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!  I also included the band's split with Aldo Raine for you to check out as well.

Length: 30'

-Press Note

Thantifaxath - Sacred White Noise (2014)

Country: Canada
Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal, Experimental
Label: Dark Descent Records, Me Saco Un Ojo
Tracks: 6
Length: 44'

So this one's all about going insane, going, quite literally, off your noggin, dipping the nosecone of your flying machine and letting the tailspin take you where it will. Spiraling is the key word on this collection - the riffs like a lorryload of spinning tops tipped down a long, sweeping rubber corkscrew of a stairway, the drums frantic to follow every trajectory while an impossibly harsh whip-cracker screams and bellows to impose order on the unrestrainable.  This is a being that hails from the same pocket of deep space as Voivod.

There are moments of respite, of shelter from this teeth-gnashing, but they serve only to let the magnitude of your detachment from the world of understanding really sink in to the shreds of mind that are left to you. But this is no senseless aural battering of the grindcore or noise variety - there is a majesty of scope to these tunes, a breadth of imagination and care that strives to mesh the unendurable blackness of deep horror with the unfathomable bounds of the limits of the cosmos thereby creating music to confront your mind with on the strictest terms. 'Through Silver in Blood', 'Paracletus' and 'Dimension Hatross' all lead to this place but Thantifaxath are deranged. Metal Gigs

Human Cull - Stillborn Nation (2014)

Country: United Kingdom
Genre: Grindcore, Crust
Label: Wooaaargh, Rip Roaring Shit Storm
Tracks: 34
Length: 35'

England, arguably the home of grindcore, has done quite well for itself in fostering a new wave of bands. From its origins in Napalm Death and Extreme Noise Terror to the new vanguard in The Atrocity Exhibit and Human Cull, the UK has got the lock on the crustier side of this explosive genre. Human Cull in particular have been developing quite the name for themselves of late, and their new album Stillborn Nation looks set to be their breakthrough. Stillborn Nation is the musical equivalent to electroconvulsive therapy: the album packs 22 short sharp shocks that sonically bear much in common with the treatment, and a doom-laden finale to finish off the survivors.

Starting with a familiar whistling guitar feedback, the first four tracks set out the band’s formula: take the controlled bursts of Nasum and Insect Warfare, throw in Discharge‘s d-beat and Amebix‘s crust, and run manically through an apocalyptic wasteland. Surprisingly for grindcore, the bass guitar actually plays a prominent role in the proceedings, with Morrish laying down thick grooves while the guitars and drums go berserk. Drummer Sam’s performance is equally impressive, being able to hit incredible speeds while also barking out vocals that complement Edd’s guttural offerings. His vocals approach almost death metal lows, a welcome break from the dime-a-dozen high-pitched yelps that are scattered across many grind bands, while the riffs he pulls out lean to either punkier or metallic sides as required (c.f. “Unwelcome Methods” vs. “Barely Hominid”). The lyrics, if you catch them, weave between historical notions of corruption and human rights abuse, with a bent towards the nihilistic as one could imagine with tracks entitled “Entombed By Progress” and “Unwilling Martyrs”. This mad dash is intense, to say the least. Having proven their worth across splits and EPs before, Human Cull have taken their first step forward as a force to be reckoned with in the grind scene. Sockweb - Werewolf (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Grindcore, Death Metal
Label: Monolith Records
Tracks: 11
Length: 18'

Who would have thought that this was a good idea? I guess I was expecting a disaster after the ridiculous experiments that have surfaced In the past: Hatebeak (parrots), Caninus (pitbulls) or even Pugs. Sockweb is another story as they have really created a frantic grindcore album that is embarrassingly better than most grindcore bands in terms of songwriting and intensity. That good. Scott Hull mastered this beast, and you can imagine how brutal it sounds. The drums, I assume have been programmed by him, because they sound similar to the last Agoraphobic Nosebleed, very natural but Jesus Christ, like a drum machine on drugs.

I can start talking about how evil and sick the vocals from Joanie are and never stop. Not only she has pipes but she nails the intensity of the best bands of the genre like Pig Destroyer. If I were the dad I would be worried about her because there are screams here that come from another world, and I don’t think any of her vocals are edited to be honest, she just sounds that pissed about her pancakes, bullies or dogs messing around in the house. Just listen to “Spoon” and feel the passion that these two have put in this album. Amazing. Katherine Katz from Agoraphobic shares vocals duties in the last track “Salamander Kate” and the results are just hair rising especially after 1.30 mark with both vocalists alternating screams like if it were a conversation. Adam’s vocals, AKA the dad, are pretty good too and offer and excellent balance with her daughters vocals. Lows and highs extravaganza. He also handles the excellent guitar in this album, which has no other word to describe it as stellar. I may be biased because I absolutely adore the idea of this project, but with my hand on my heart , these are 17.41 minutes of grindcore that will make your life more “brutorable”. Evil Warnings

Tanned Christ - Edifice EP (2014)

Country: Australia
Genre: Chaotic Hardcore, Grindcore, Noise Rock
Label: Like Young Records
Tracks: 5
Length: 7'

A new project out of Sydney has surfaced featuring members from Making, Narrow Lands and Totally Unicorn. Tanned Christ play an inventive and jangley chaotic hardcore/grindcore. They have a great mix of fast and choppy riffs, blast beats, long drawn out simple parts, and the occasional slow and heavy part. Overall its a pretty good EP that leaves me eager to hear more from these guys, dig it.

Dakhma - S/T (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Black Metal, Crust, Grindcore
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 6
Length: 24'

Dakhma is an abrasive female-fronted band from Grand Rapids, Michigan. They play a caustic and pissed-off as hell crusty/grind tinged black metal. I really dig everything about this album, from the rager vocalist to the almost lo-fi production which captures well the cold atmosphere. Its an unrelenting, epic and fierce listen, highly recommended, dig it.

Asilo - Comunión (2014)

Country: Argentina
Genre: Sludge, Doom, Crust, Experimental
Label: Zann's Music
Tracks: 10
Length: 53'

-Press Note
