Length: 23.0'

Remek is a four piece band from Hlavní město Praha, Czech Republic who formed in 2010.  Remek play a discordant, passionate, and volatile style of music that draws inspiration from several subgenres of underground music including hardcore, punk, and emo.  Since their inception in 2010, Remek have released a four song demo 7" in July of 2011, a two song flexi 7" in 2011, a split LP with Child Meadow in June of 2012, and a split LP with Paperplanecrash in April of 2013.  Musically, Remek can be loosely compared to bands such as The Saddest Landscape, Indian Summer, Trembling Hands, and Daitro.  This is Remek's latest eight song LP, which is slated for release on Stonehenge Records and Music For Liberation on May 4th, 2014.  These eight songs were recorded at Blum's (Gattaca) recording studio in December of 2013 and mixed by Will Killingsworth (Orchid, Ampere, Failures, etc.) of Dead Air studios in December 2013/January 2014.  Overall, this album is amazing and will definitely appeal to fans of modern European screamo.  Highly recommended!  Seriously, this is one of the best albums I've heard this month.  Enjoy!

Skinfather - None Will Mourn (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Crust
Label: Streetcleaner Records
Tracks: 9
Length: 31'

Luckily Skinfather have managed to put all their influences together in an album that is much more than an anemic look at the past. In essence, they are a hardcore band playing old school death metal which is ,in a way, what makes Xibalba unique too. Both bands have destroyed the barriers of genres and added most of the cool elements of both. But don’t get me wrong, Xibalba and Skinfather are sons of different fathers, their sound is nothing alike.
This album blew me away for several reasons. First of all, the primal energy of the recording. The album, engineered by Taylor Young from Nails is what the genre needs: chunky, fat, greasy and quite flexible. Secondly, the riffs are top notch, just listen to “Down in Black”, “Dead Still”, “Calloused” or “Born of Despair”, which has a very interesting And Justice For All feel as examples of this. The whole album is a complete assault. There is no compromise when it comes to songwriting but at the same time the sound has expanded more than before. There are little nuances, drum fills, and guitar arrangements that we can’t ignore just because of the primal approach of the band. If the album at times can be accused of stagnation, it is a trade-off that Skinfather had to do because of the nature of the music. This minor issue shouldn’t make anyone skeptical about None Will Mourn as this is a hell of a trip into the depths of some of the best moshable death metal ever created. Evil Warnings

Nuklear Frost - Subjugation (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Black Metal
Label: Tridroid Records
Tracks: 7
Length: 32'

Nuklear Frost deliver riveting melodic black metal that hits like a maelstrom in full fury, yet the songs are so packed with righteous riffs and ominous melodies that the music exerts a strong magnetic attraction. The songs have identity and staying power; it’s an album that will draw you back again and again, and not simply for the pure rush it delivers to all good adrenaline junkies. The production on the album is as sharp as knives, which is a big plus, because the musicians are all worth hearing. The scything tremolo chords thresh and slash with tremendous force, the thundering/blasting drums are spine-jarring, and the deep grinding bass tone is skull-crushing all by itself.

The songs are also wonderfully dynamic. Nuklear Frost break their breakneck rampages at just the right moments, delivering softer (but no less threatening) instrumental interludes — brief breathers that only enhance the savagery of the raging storms that follow them. For lovers of bands such as Dissection and Naglfar, Subjugation is a must-listen. It came out of nowhere, so to speak, but it’s one of the most appealing black metal albums I’ve heard this year. Physical copies (both disc and cassette) will be forthcoming through Tridroid Records. No Clean Singing

Dead Air - st LP (2013)

Country: USA
Genre: Noise Rock, Punk, Post Punk
Label: Load Records
Tracks: 6
Length: 23'

Dead Air is a Providence trio launching burnt-on, baked on slobber straight from the main vein of a grease clogged heart. From the ashes of primal reducers, the Black Clouds, Dead Air uses a two guitar and drum tool set to build a double tailed fuck beast huffin’ pure six pack grunt. Brings to mind pill poppers/school skippers like the U-men or the Cherubs in attack with additional double helix sniff. Fange - Poisse EP (2014)

Country: France
Genre: Sludge, Noise
Label: Lost Pilgrims Records, Basement Apes, Ulterior Records, Cold Dark Matter, Zugzwang Productions
Tracks: 6
Length: 30'

Fange is a new three piece band from Rennes. Poisse is its first EP,  which it'll be released on CD in a few weeks and LP release will follow this autumn. Band consists of Baptiste Gautier-Lorenzo on drums (Brain Pyramid), Benjamin Moreau on guitars, backing vocals, noise (Huata) and Jean-Baptiste Lévêque on vocals and noise. Taking into consideration each member’s musical background, one can be sure that Poisse will indeed deliver. The down-tuned guitars, distorted bass and harrowing throat scuffings raise a concrete wall of harsh riffs and abrasive noises. The atmosphere becomes even more blurred by the large amounts of feedback and distortion completing the essence of decadence and torture. If you appeal for dirty, massive, noisy and loud sludge music, you should grab Poisse asap, highly recommended, dig it.

Gruel - S/T (2009)

Country: United Kingdom
Genre: Sludge Metal, Doom, Experimental
Label: Feast Of Tentacles
Tracks: 4
Length: 60'

Ghastly, treacherous sounds. Gut-wrenching and torturous. Gigantic, earth shattering blasts of sludge are interspersed, by eerie, haunting soundscapes. Gruel are absolutely foul, beyond belief. The grinding of the sludgy, preposterous guitars is enough to rumble your insides until you puke out your own lungs. If they made a film where John McClane and Indiana Jones had a big, fuck off, massive fight for about an hour, this record would be the soundtrack in its entirety. The atmosphere would be incepted by the daunting howls, as John and Indy square up, in a cage constructed out of testosterone and iron girders they bent and shaped themselves, bare handed, only for McClane to pummel Indy’s head right through the bars anyway, as the bloodcurdling brawl ascends to sewers, to the top of a building, to the wing of an aeroplane, until one of them is nothing but a ripped up torso – In a horrifying, gruesome, emotionally scarring sort of way. Not in a “I’ll bite your balls off!” Monty Python way. This record fucking hates you. It wants to cut you. It wants to confiscate a limb of yours, and twat you about with it, for giggles. This record wants you dead, and it wants to be the one that snuffs you good, you fucking pansy. Pack a spare set of pants to soil and a bucket to barf in. Collective Zine

Upper Chief-Delete It All EP (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Post Rock,Screamo, Emo, Lo-fi, Experimental
Label: Self-Released
Tracks: 8
Length: 24.0'

Upper Chief is a solo project from Jack C. Tomasak, hailing from Purchase NY by way of Kensington, CT.  Upper Chief is an experimental foray into post rock, emo, screamo, and lo-fi music with guitar and vocals courtesy of Jack C. Tomasak.  Upper Chief cites a diverse variety of influences as inspiration including Slint, Portraits Of Past, Shotmaker, Rockets Red Glare, and Sonic Youth.  These diverse variety of influences translate into a really interesting style of lo-fi sounding screamo/ emo with an experimental post rock vibe that really suits Upper Chief's sound well.  In all honesty, I'm kind of at a loss of words in doing this review.  But with that being said, that's not necessarily a bad thing.  Delete It All is an engaging and thought provoking listen.  These eight songs were recorded at Purchase College by John Molfetas, who also plays in Bag Of Bones.  People looking for something different to listen to will definitely appreciate these eight songs.  Fans of lo-fi sounding emo should really give this a listen.  Great stuff!  Enjoy!

Kroko Discography (2001-2004)

Country: Finland
Genre: Avant-Prog, Improv Noise Rock
Label: Verdura Records, Tenzenmen Records
Tracks: 30
Length: 93'

Like most bands hailing form Finland Kroko find themselves well at home within the realms of absurd musical integrities. Their sound falls somewhere within the boundaries of, noise, improv Jazz, ambience and a skronky style Avant-garde. Just imagine the crazed intensity of Ruins crossed with improvised realms of Jazzy avant-ambience, only to be dowsed by the dark and brooding experimental side of Univers Zero. Most of the tracks include on this album have been taken from live performances then mixed with all sorts of mixing effects, constituting to the wide array of unexplainable noise. This was a smart move by such a band, giving a more insightful outlook on what the bands is about, demonstrating the not only the harsh face but also giving infinite freedom to the improv nature of the band.

The main compound of Kroko is loosely based around the defining skeletal structure of the manic drum section; fronting the impressive performance of Petri Hissa. These scattered but strangely coherent rhythms hold the album together beautifully enabling the careless flow from one passage to the next. At the forefront of the Duo’s sound we are constantly startled by Pentti Dassum’s violent out bursts, then gliding soothingly into Jazzy textures. Shear intensity floods through our veins through short more Ruins orientated passages, while we are soothed by the beautifully almost deconstructed longer compositions infested with squeaking, scraping, whaling feedback creating beautiful Ambient-jazz soundscapes. Trembling Hands-S/T LP (2014)

Country: Sweden
Genre: Post Hardcore Punk, Emo, Screamo
Label: Pike/Middle Man/Tell Wilhelm/Gaashud Records
Tracks:7
Length: 31.0'

Trembling Hands is a three piece band from Göteborg, Sweden who formed in the summer of 2011.  Trembling Hands features members of Suis La Lune and Tjuvjakt.  Since their inception in 2011, Trembling Hands have two releases under their belts, which include a two song 7" entitled Nights/Days in 2012 and a split 7" with Wits End.  Trembling Hands play a angular, discordant, and tense style of music that draws inspiration from late 90's and early 2000's emotive hardcore.  The great thing about Trembling Hand's sound is that they have a great Ebullition records influence to their sound made popular by bands such as Funeral Diner, Indian Summer, Ordination Of Aaron, and Torches To Rome.  This is the band's debut seven song LP, which is set for release via Pike, Middle Man, Tell Wilhelm, and Gaashud in early April.  On their self-titled debut, Trembling Hands offer up seven songs of angular, discordant, tense, and well executed post hardcore, emotive hardcore, and screamo.  Overall, Trembling Hands have absolutely nailed it here and will most certainly appeal to fans of Sed Non Satiata, Daitro, and Brito.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

-SWQW

Hard To Swallow - Protected By The Ejaculation Of Serpents (1998)

Country: United Kingdom
Genre: Grindcore, Hardcore, Powerviolence
Label: Household Name Records
Tracks: 25
Length: 63'

So obviously listening to John Holmes, Withdrawn and Canvas over the past few days has got me thinking about some of the other classic albums released by Household Name Records. One of the stand out records in their back catalogue would be Hard to Swallow's Protected by the Ejaculation of Serpents. Musically Hard to Swallow could best be described as a mix of grind, power violence and hardcore. They put a unique twist on all the styles they incorporated, though, and there have been very few bands wither before or since that had a similar sound to HTS. Their legacy and lineage is also of note, and emphasis the influence they had on UKHC and metal as a whole. Members of Hard to Swallow would go on to either form or join bands like Electric Wizard, Iron Monkey, Helvis, Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine, Dukes Of Nothing, and John Holmes. Label: Self Released
Tracks: 8
Length: 24'

Earthburner is a power-trio from Colombus, Ohio, previously featured on this blog with their first album "Stoned At Birth" in 2012. They are back with another killer album, released on 5th March. Clocking in almost 25 minutes, "Forced To Exist" is pure savagery and unrelenting music. You can hear Entombed-style riffage with crust/d-beat leanings, which overall makes it a powerful and a unforgiving listen. Seriously, this album will tear you apart. Highly recommended, dig it.

Country: Czech Republic/Sweden
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Crust, Post Metal, Post Hardcore
Label: Self-Released (Music For Liberation?)
Tracks: 2
Length: 35.0'

Now here's a band that I accidentally stumbled across when surfing for more information on bandcamp about Marnost after digging the last two posts about that band from my blogger in crime, Eraser.  Avvika is a five piece band from Praha (CZ), Děčín (CZ) and Stockholm, Sweden, who formed in 2013, from the looks of things.  Avvika play an epic, dense, and atmospheric style of music that's inspired by several sub genres of heavy music including hardcore, punk, crust, post metal, and post hardcore.  The great thing about Avvika is that their vocalist is female and the band also employs the use of strings, which adds another hauntingly bleak layer to the band's already barren and foreboding sound.  Loose comparisons can be made to bands such as Amber, Fall Of Efrafa, Lightbearer, and Locktender when describing Avvika's sound.  This is the band's debut two song LP, which was self-released digitally on February 26th, 2014.  Overall, this album makes for a really complex, dark, and powerful listen.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

(U.S.) Somos-Temple Of Plenty LP (2014)

Country: USA
Genre: Punk, Emo, Indie Rock
Label: Tiny Engines
Tracks: 9
Length: 27.0'

Somos is a four piece band from Boston, MA who formed in 2012.  Somos play a melodic, energetic, and impossibly catchy style of punk, emo, and indie rock.  The cool thing about Somos is that they have a somber undercurrent that is vaguely reminiscent of bands such as Pity Sex, Daylight, and Make Do And Mend.  Actually, this is my first taste of the band, which is always a good thing when doing reviews, because I had no expectations about these four dudes whatsoever and I pretty much approached this album with a completely blank slate.  With that being said, Temple Of Plenty absolutely delivers the goods.  The nine songs on this album will definitely appeal to the Topshelf records template of punk/emo, but does so in a way that steers clear of being derivative or a total rehash of countless numbers of modern emo bands.  Overall, this is an amazing LP that will definitely appeal to anyone who appreciates modern punk, emo, and indie rock.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

Olive Drab is a four piece band from Philadelphia, PA who formed in 2012.  Olive Drab play a killer style of punk, emo, and indie rock.  Musically, Olive Drab can be loosely compared to bands such as Algernon Cadwallader, Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate), Nai Harvest, as well as older emo/indie bands such as Knapsack and Mineral.  With that being said, please use these comparisons as a starting point of reference because Olive Drab have a sound and personality all their own.  The Big Sleep is the band's debut ten song LP, which was or will soon be released on cassette through Birdtapes.  This ten song LP hits in all the right places and will definitely appeal to anyone into modern emo and indie rock.  Seriously this album is that good.  I'm actually quite surprised that a larger label like Topshelf or Run For Cover hasn't scooped these dudes up yet.  Overall, Olive Drab have absolutely nailed it.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!  Act quick if you want a copy of this cassette because only 50 copies of The Big Sleep were made.

The Stabs Discography (2006-2009)

Country: Australia
Genre: Post-Punk, Blues Punk, Noise Rock
Label: Homeless Records, Spooky Records
Tracks: 18
Length: 67'

After forming nearly ten years ago, Melbourne band, The Stabs, didn't so much burst onto any scene, they burst dramatically all over several. Despite the band's best intentions, they quickly developed a notoriety for violence, both musical and literal. Driven by a perfectionism that they felt was lost on their audience, shows often exploded into a masochistic orgy of self-destruction. The band's frustration at their own perceived shortcomings causing damage to equipment and eardrums, whilst audience members cheered in the false assumption that The Stabs were intentionally about the spectacle of discordance, implosion, self-loathing, ataxia, drug abuse, and danger music. Heroically, the members of the band staid the course, desperate to prove that their musical vision was sound (double entendre intended). Within a few years, the band managed to turn their reputation from disastrous train wreck to world-class exponents of a uniquely Australian form of rock music, that curious entanglement of punk, blues, noise, and swamp pioneered by bands such as The Scientists, Birthday Party, and Lubricated Goat.

They were Mick Harvey's pick for the inaugural ATP at Mt Buller. Unbeaten and undiminished, The Stabs impressed all-comers with their tight devotion to ear-splitting intensity... And songs. Unlike many groups which have preceded and followed, this band have always been a songs-based act. Underneath quivering slabs of feedback, the gut-wrenching rumble of bass, and punishing percussion, an almost incongruous pop sensibility still manages to emerge. With the release on vinyl of The Stabs first two full-length albums, this is what listeners can expect. Equal parts sonic bliss and aural castigation. Putting their days of wanton chaos and self-sabotage far behind them, and with the assistance of Homeless Records, 2006?s "Dirt" and 2009's "Dead Wood" are available for the first time on The Stabs preferred format, black vinyl. With this double release, The Stabs are proud to announce that they are not dead (once again, double entendre intended). The Stabs have done their penance, now it?s up to you - punish yourself!
